General News: 15/05/2017

Please be aware that there has been a major outbreak of a computer virus over the weekend in over 70 countries.

The UK’s  health systems being one of the main organisations effected.

It is continuing to impact organizations across several countries causing disruptions at banks, hospitals, telecommunications services, train stations, and other mission-critical organizations in multiple countries, including the UK, Spain, Germany, and Turkey. Ransomware is typically delivered via phishing emails or exploit kits.

The virus is highly virulent self-replicating ransomware called WannaCrypt0r, WannaCry or WCry.

This ransomware is capable of encrypting all the files of entire networks, making all data on PC and network drives unusable. Users of infected systems are asked to pay a ransom, typically in bitcoins, in order to access files that were encrypted.

The most likely way of being infected is via an email that contains an attachment or a link that downloads the virus payload.

Users should be extremely suspicious of all e-mails they receive, particularly those that ask the recipient to open attached documents or click on Web links.
